Standard in pictures - coat

Carpathian wolf. Ideal exterior of Czechoslovakian wolfdog. The goal in breeding. As Mr.Hartl sayd: "Who want´s to know, how the czechoslovakian wolfdog should look like, should go in the ZOO and observe our wolves."

Skin

The skin is elastic, firm, without wrinkles, unpigmented.
Faults

Fault in pigmentation.

Significant forehead wrinkles. Left very strong, right developed furrow. Wrinkling of the skin on the head.

Coat - quality, colour

Coat of Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is similar to the wolf. Whether the quality, functionality, but also color and its replacement - shedding. Coat is for the dog very efficient protection against cold and frost, rain and high temperatures.

The summer coat is shorter, sheding, the winter is dense, the male's neck creates a so-called wolf collar. This fact is important to consider, because the season affects the quality of hair and even its color. By the standard must be visible difference between the two types of hair.

The top coat is to be a little harsher and undercoat soft. This coat is fulfilling its function and the dog dries quickly, easily fall the dirt down. You can see the correct coat on photo. In the coat can occur differences, some have the coat bit longer, some shorter, but never extremely long as long coated shepperd or short as shortcoated breeds.

Colour

Colors by wolfdogs is more than one all are good (except for non-standard colors). Here are some options. The standard states "yellowish-gray to wolf gray with characteristic light mask. Light coat color must be on the bottom of the neck and anterior chest. It is permissible to dark gray color with light mask."

And few words from me about the pure gray color nearly white - the color of wolves in the Carpathians is never white gray, or gray. This is the color inherited from the German Shepherd. In the wild, wolfs have the color of the field, where they live. Therefore, as a gray-colored in our forests, it can only hardly stay masked. Although this color is permissible, is "rare". Another thing is the pigmentation of the rest of the body - by to light colors can be loss of pigment, which is a fault. Unpopular predominant color is brown, some breeders are trying to refuse the color from the breeding. But still, the is the really correct color of Carpathian wolf.

Wolfdogs coloration is similar to wolf type and is called agouti.

A better view on the top coat, is agouti type, ie type of wolf, wolf coloring. The top coat has several colors at once, from black through brown, reddish, or silver, to white - cream. Colored are just the tips of the hair.

The undercoat compared with the outer coat is soft, dense, cream and pale colors.

Photos change the color and the dogs can have a slightly different shade. It also depends on the season and the quality of the camera. Photographs are illustrative.

Silver gray color - dominated by shades of gray to black, minimum of brown.

Brown, reddish color - shades of brown, wolf gray, mostly on the top line of the back, on head and tail less.

Dark color - strong shades of dark brown to black, bold colors, black prevalent around the back, head, tail and legs are brown, but white mask is preserved and not brown.

Soft shades of brown - colors are slightly brown, beige, wolf color between gray and brown, without distinct dark areas.

The hair on the tail and its coloring is typical for wolfdogs. The tail begin is in the color of the rest of the body, and about in half of the upper part, is black line, that indicates the place with scent glands, as the wolves have. The black line is 8-10 cm long. The following is a paler shade and by knees of the hind legs starts black hair - tip of tail. Black and pale interface should be in knees level. Inner side of the tail is pale throughout the whole length, except the tip. On the right picture wolf tail, in the middle CSW with too many black along the entire length of the tail and in addition is at the root of the hair open. Left puppy, tail is longer and in summer coat.

Faults in colour

A common mistake is, that people compare the color of the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog with American wolves. However, it is necessary to look at the natural color of the Carpathian wolf. They are not pure white or pure black. Does not even have the "gray" color. This is the color of the German shepherd. Although not considered to be faulty or incorrect, is allowed each of the above mentioned colors. Invalid color is black, white or very dark brown.

Speaking of hair, it is necessary to mention the history of our wolfdogs. And the fact is, that by the breeding has been used German shepherds with "terrible" color - for the wolfdog. Problems with a mask and coat in the past were quite serious and struggling with it also today. Think of Kazan z PS (Figure 1, source: wolfdog.org). Dogs who do have him more times in pedigree (was used inbreeding on him), have problems with the exterior. However do not give everything bad just to him. The old lines have a problem with stability of color and mask. Even today there are extremes, color faults like in photos below. The problem is the fact that some breeders have started to prefer pale color, bordered with white and my personal view, that this is a big minus.

Picture in the middle - extreme color, although the dog is old, when the color usually does not correspond with the color of youth. Image right color for CsW greatly resembling shepperd (source: wolfdog.org).

The typical for German sheppers is saddle. Its the dark colored fur on top line, going to the belly. This is not a thing of standard, but in wolves do not appear. On left, the dark color commes to belly, in middle just partly, but on right, the extreme - a clear line of solid black (photo: internet)

This individual has a strange and unusual coloration, resembling rather. It is only a shade of brown. On the second picture a pure white puppy. I must say, that this is a mix (Saarloos?). By CsW is pure white color not allowed (photo: internet)

Quality of coat

The quality of the hair depends on the place where the dog lives. Another coat will have a dog living in Slovakia and another dog living in Brazil. The dogs hair is straight, closed. Winter and summer coat differ greatly. In winter an immense undercoat predominates, with a topcoat, forms a thick coat all over body. It is necessary that the hair is covering the abdomen, inner thighs, testicles by males, inner part of the ear and between the fingers. The neck is well furnished.

Puppies have different hair than an adult dogs. First shedding is around 5 months, but it is individual and happens not at once. In the picture below you can see the change of the puppy coat on tail. At the root on the right is "puppy" hair, resembling only a undercoat. Left in the picture the start of "adult" coat, the onset of top coat. The picture on the right side is by a pupp 3 months old.

The length of hair is max.13 cm (approx), but length is not the same everywhere on the body! On the legs is shorter, at the back and sides longer. About 6 cm on sides, back and shoulder around 13 cm, on the shoulder it can be a little more. These are the figures for adult males, females have shorter hair and not so dense. They miss the wolf collar.

Interestingly, the undercoat is never in dark color, is always creamy, sometimes a little darker, but never black. Dark hair - black is only on topcoat and only on the tip. By the elimination for breeding, should exclude individuals, who do not have the pale, creamy hair, but dark brown, respectively atypically colored undercoat.

By comparing the coat of German shepherd, wolves and wolfdogs, are clear differences. Eg. Wolfdogs have 5 types of hair, shepherds only 4. Number of nests per cm2 by the Shepherd is 168, by wolfdogs 432. In one nest the Shepherd has 6-20 hairs, other breeds 3-15, 31-37 wolfdogs. The number of hairs per cm2 is obvious different. Other breeds 800-3500, 1008-3360 Shepherd, Wolfdogs 13392-15984. Wolfdogs have a similar number as wolves.

Comparison of coat color in different seasons of the same male.

The picture on the left is outer coat. Picture in middle and right - coat is in the space between the toes.

On the upper picture, you can see a normal, standard male testicles, covered with fur. On the picture down, the testicles are "naked" or covered only by minimum fur.

Faults in quality

Currently we encounter a problem of wavy, curly hair. The problem is also open coat, hair too short or too long. This mostly can be seen in Italy, where is the long-haired dog on shows more successful.

Poor coat - with this issue we do not meet so often on bonitations, respectively in the codes from bonitations, but it often happens that individuals are not enough coated. This is particularly by the males, who do not have coated testicles. It may happen, that the dog has short hair, so that his coat looks sometimes as if it was not present.

The lack of hair on testicles.

A fine coat - easily recognizable defect. The top coat of the dog is tough, rough. The undercoat is soft. Among these must be a clear distinction. After shedding and growth of new hair, coat is still soft, but it quickly hardens. By the soft coat doesn't occur hardening of coat, is soft on the touch throughout the year. This coat does not fulfill the purpose. Do not cool the body and do not prevent overheating in summer, in winter does not heat and does not easily dry.

Open coat -  is the coat most common problem. The opening of hair occurs for many reasons. Sometimes its is opening so serious, that may lead to disqualification. In the first case, the opening is because the hair is short and is in all body parts of the same length. The top coat and undercoat are the same length. This coat does not cover the body and do not lie down, but stays, the dog acts, as if he were just bathed and dried hair by dryer. Hair is "fluffy" and looks like Malamute. Therefore, do not comb wolfdogs as Malamutes, hair has not to be "fluffy", but lie down and cover the entire body.

Sharp, open coat.

Another reason for opening of hair is, if hair is too long and creates a feeling of opening, that it "lie down" on sides. Long hair comes from long-haired shepherd and some breeders even support this and intentionally bred dogs with longer hair. Mainly the problem is seen in Italy. Hair has not different lengths on the back and sides, but the whole body in the same length, even on the ears and legs.

Very long hair, which is nonstandard. Long hair in the ears, hind legs, sides, tail

Long hair by a puppy. Already at a young age you can recognize it. Such dogs should be selected, as long coat gene is inherited and the meeting of two carriers is a high probability of puppies born with long hair.

The last reason for ope coat is wave coat to its extreme, and curling. As curly occurs mainly the back or the dog's neck, tail, where the long hair is located. In this case, an excuse, that the dog is freshly washed does not hold. Coat of the dog will not curve by his washing.

Atypical coat - this defects are all deviations from standards, that have not been described above. Particularly short hair. This is the coat of the same quality the whole year round. That is, when there is no difference by coat in winter and summer. Dog with thick hair over the summer is not correct. Conversely, short coat in winter is a mistake. The opposite problem is the long hair - a common problem for German Shepherds is found mainly in Italy. Longhaired Wolfdogs do not shed and can be seen in the show coat in winter and summer. Especially exhibitors from Italy, who keep dogs in air-conditioned boxes, prefer a long, thick fur throughout the whole year. But this is a mistake, because even show condition, can not cause the same coat all year round.

Short hair, that does not change at all depending on the season. The photo was done in late November, when the dog has to be coated in a thick winter coat.

Ridge on nose, this problem occurs also by Saarloos wolfdogs.

Mask

In layman's terms - the mask is the white on the head of the dog and also on the mouth :)

We recognize three levels of masks. Orange in the figure indicates a normal mask, which is not in the bonitation code. It is a perfect mask, where white goes to the nose. The difference between white and brown color is bright, clear. The darker colored dogs are allowed to have at the nose a little darker tip of muzzle. But the color difference must be strong and clear. Important is the form of masks. Thus its shape.

Purple line determines, where in addition to the normal mask can be found black respectively dark hair. The code name M5. The other thing is, if such a mask we see by a puppy. This can still turn into white. However, if an adult is having unclear difference between brown and white at the tip of the muzzle to the nose, dominating dark gray hair, or gray, where should he have white, this is a so called weak of mask.

Green determined the place where can reach black muzzle. This is M2 and makes worse overall outcome of bonitation. Although it is debatable what is dog without a mask and the lack of a featureless mask. Many young dogs and puppies have mask M2 and M5, but this will turn pale with time. Black muzzle of wolves indicates that it is a puppy. But it should disappear in about six months. When the wolf do not have it, the puppy is placed in the hierarchy. By the wolfdogs black color is undesirable.

Very nice mask, with clear margins. Right a mask, which is white along the whole length of the lower jaw. It is also important that this can be seen, this means that the lips can not cover the muzzle, so that is not visible the white.

Faults

The mask is not just the face, but also part of the lower jaw, which tends not unusually black, respectively too little bleached. The bottom of the jaw is enough colored on the right photo.

But on this picture is too much black on the jaw.

Weak mask.

Gross lack of mask. This deficiency can lead to the disqualification. (photo: wolfdog.org)

Undesirable is also weak, faint mask (left), atypical mask (on the right, which has not clear lines and is "blend" in the wrong places.

The predominance of brown in mask (left), so too less white in the mask, which should be eliminated by selection. The picture on the right lack of mask (Source: Presentation Mrs.Bognárová).

Weak mask. Black muzzle, black hair, causing blend of mask almost to the neck.

Unusual and atypical pattern around the eyes. This color reminds the Nordic breeds and Saarloos.
